I really don’t ever remember a time when Freddy Krueger was scary to me. Entertaining? Yeah, sure, but scary, never. I find myself weirdly fascinated by people who do find Krueger scary. On a whole, I can see how he can be terrifying; he haunts your dreams, he wears that freaky red and green sweater with the nasty fedora, he’s all burned and he’s got that horrible glove with the razor-sharp claws. Even better, before he became the pure personification of evil, he was a vile child killer who was hunted down, lynch-mob style, by a bunch of angry parents and set on fire.
So, yeah, he’s creepy and he’s villainous, but Freddy Krueger is so much fun to watch, in the end. The Nightmare movies devolved over time from seriously scaring people into movies built around cool concepts of how Freddy Krueger could hack apart six or seven teenagers a movie in new-fangled ways.
I’m doing all seven movies plus the bonus features this week, but does anyone remember the Freddy Krueger TV show? Because I do…
I guess this week more than anything will be a test of my fortitude, considering some of the awfulness contained in the Nightmare series, but hopefully I’ll make it through okay.
Hopefully.

You didn’t watched Part III all alone in the dark at your cousin’s house at 11. I could only stomach the first 5 minutes and had to turn it off. I wanted to keep watching but I was too freaked out by it.
Sounds silly now. I also broke into a cold sweat watching The Blob (1988). I miss being scared by movies. Ah, to be a child again.
Awww, Kevin!
Well, the Nightmare movies never scared me, but I was terrified of Gremlins when I was a kid, especially Gremlins II. (Sad, but true). And Children of the Corn totally freaked me out when I was little; for some reason, Freddy Krueger never really stuck with me.
At least you were never afraid of a talking Gremlin that sang “New York, New York,” because I certainly was.
The first Gremlins was creepy, definitely. The second was a total romp. I love those movies. I’m sure a remake will pop up someday … sigh.
Now that we’re talking scary movies, the top three freak outs for me came from:
Halloween (original)
An American Werewolf in London
‘Salems Lot
Oh, and The Ring scared the bejesus out of me in the cinema. I have no excuse for that one. Horror movies rock. (Good ones, that is.)
I love the first, third, and forth Elm Street movies. Dream Warriors is especially awesome. I had no idea there was a TV show! Was it any good?
Have fun this week, it’s gonna be a long one!
Kevin, I saw Ju-On, the Japanese original of The Grudge, in theaters and it spooked the hell out of me and my friend.
Alien freaked me out. The idea of something growing in you… *shudder*
I had no idea there was a TV show! Was it any good?
Not particularly – if I remember correctly, it wasn’t on very long and it was devoted to explaining excerpts of Krueger’s human life. I could be way wrong though – I was young when I was watching it.
And thanks for the well-wishes!
